Two Churches closed due to repeated vandalism

Country: Germany

Date of incident: October 26, 2024

Catholic churches of St. Mauritius in Kippenheim and St. Leopold in Mahlberg (Baden-Württemberg) have been closed temporarily closed after multiple incidents of vandalism. The parish reports that the interiors of both churches were defiled with cigarette butts, soot, and wax from candles, some of which were partially burned and left behind.

These acts occurred over several days and appear to have been deliberate. While the physical destruction is not extensive, parishioners said that the spaces feel violated and spiritually disrespected.

Due to repeated disturbances, the parish leadership has decided, in consultation with the archdiocese and the police, to keep the churches closed to prevent further incidents. Services are being relocated to other nearby churches. This decision was not made lightly, but the parish believes it is necessary to protect the sanctity of the buildings and ensure the safety of visitors.

The parish is urging anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious to come forward. A police investigation is ongoing, but no suspects have yet been identified.
