Terrorist arrested for planning attack on Cathedral
In July 2024, security forces prevented a planned terrorist attack on the Holy Dormition Cathedral, an Orthodox church in Maikop, Republic of Adygea. The suspect, an 18-year-old supporter of the Islamic State (IS), was arrested before he could carry out the attack. On 11 November, the Maikop City Court extended his pre-trial detention until 11 January 2025.
According to investigators, the suspect had planned to target clergy and security personnel, set the church on fire, and record the attack for dissemination on social media to promote the ideology of an international terrorist organisation. Authorities reported that he had conducted surveillance of the site, developed an attack plan, purchased materials, and assembled improvised incendiary devices. During the arrest, prohibited propaganda materials, a knife, a terrorist organisation’s flag, and components for incendiary devices were seized.
Separately, another suspect was detained in Donetsk for allegedly attempting to bomb the prosecutor’s office building.
