Ban on funeral processions in Manduria

Country: Italy

Date of incident: November 8, 2024

The mayor of Manduria, Gregorio Pecoraro, has approved an ordinance banning walking funeral processions. A local councillor is challenging the ban, saying it restricts religious freedom.

On 8 November, the mayor of the Italian municipality Manduria issued an order banning funeral processions on foot, citing the vastness of the city's territory and traffic considerations. This blank ban on religious processions, inlcuding the music bands which traditionally follow the funeral processions, restricts the freedom to manifest one’s religion in public.

City councillor Domenico Sammarco has called for the repeal of an ordinance banning funeral processions in Manduria. According to him, the decree not only violates the funeral traditions of the citizens, but constitutes a illegitimate ordinance that injunerg religious freedom and was issued in violation of proper administrative procedures.
