Suspected arson attack at church in Skórzewo near Poznań

On 2 January 2025, a fire broke out in a church in Skórzewo near Poznań, Poland, with the parish indicating that it may have been caused by arson. A witness reported seeing a person where the fire started, but the suspect escaped.

A member of the parish clergy stated in an interview that he believed the fire was the result of an arson attack, a view also reflected in a statement published by the parish of St Martin and St Vincent. The incident led to the cancellation of parish activities and calls for prayer and support. The fire produced significant smoke inside the church but was brought under control with the help of local residents before the fire brigade arrived. The smoke caused additional damage to the interior of the church. 

Police stated that CCTV footage has been secured, witnesses have been interviewed, and they are working to apprehend the perpetrator. While authorities have not yet confirmed the cause and are also considering accidental factors, the presence of a suspected individual at the scene and the parish’s assessment point to a deliberate targeting of a place of worship. A member of the clergy from the parish shared his assesment in an interview that he believed it was an arson attack.
