Christ Figure Repeatedly Destroyed At Memorial Chapel in Peißenberg
The Christ figure on a field cross near the miners’ memorial chapel on the Neue Bergehalde in Peißenberg was deliberately damaged twice, with both arms broken off. The repeated targeting of the depiction of Christ has raised concern among local community members.
As reported on January 10, the incidents concern a field cross located next to the Knappengedächtniskapelle, a memorial chapel built in 1996 to commemorate miners and those who died in mining accidents. According to local representatives, the arms of the Christ figure were first severely damaged shortly before the official blessing of the restored cross in September 2024. In a second act, reported in January, both arms were again deliberately broken off. The cross, which had been carefully restored after being donated from the estate of a former miner and sacristan, thus became the direct target of repeated acts of vandalism.
The Knappenverein, which maintains the chapel, reported the incident to the police. The site has experienced vandalism in the past, including the desecration of the chapel interior. Despite this, the association has stated that the cross will be repaired and reinstalled.
