Suspected arson attack on church in Borgholm
A fire inside a church in Borgholm is being investigated as a suspected arson attempt after smoke developed from an object inside the building. Authorities found no natural cause for the incident.
The incident occurred on 13 January 2025 at approximately 16:52, when emergency services were alerted to smoke inside the church. According to reports, the fire originated in a container inside the building, where a fire is believed to have been deliberately lit, causing significant smoke development. Emergency services removed the container and ventilated the church.
Police stated that no accidental or technical cause could be identified and therefore classified the case as attempted arson. At the time of reporting, no suspect had been identified. Commenting on the incident, acting vicar Björn Leander stated: “It could have been a total loss,” highlighting the potential severity of the situation.
