Acid attack on Christian café: 15 attacks since July 2024

Country: Germany

Date of incident: March 10, 2025

The Café "Stay" of an evangelical free church in Leipzig has been attacked with butyric acid. The perpetrators probably poured acid into the coffee shop through the keyhole of the entrance door. The owners had to call the fire brigade. The perpetrators are suspected to be left-wing extremists. This is the 15th attack on the Christian café since July 2024.

The fire brigade was called in the morning because an unknown substance had leaked. A fire brigade spokesman said it smelled like butyric acid. The cafe in the Reudnitz district was then ventilated, but the emergency services found no cause for the acid leak. According to the police, the perpetrator or perpetrators apparently poured the acid into through the keyhole of the entrance door.

The café, which opened in 2023, is run by the evangelical Zeal Church. By July 2024, there had been 15 attacks on the cafe. Windows were repeatedly smashed. The church suspects that the perpetrators are left-wing extremists who have repeatedly accused the church of "queerphobia" for holding to traditional Christian teachings about gender as man and woman. The Zeal Church denies these accusations. In a statement issued after the incident, it said everyone was welcome to attend its church services and experience the "fervent love and freedom of God".
