Crucifix set alight and 40 headstones smashed

A large wooden crucifix was set on fire and around 40 headstones were smashed in a serious act of vandalism at St Conval’s Cemetery in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire, Scotland, in the early hours of Sunday, June 29, 2025. The Catholic community has expressed deep sorrow over the attack, which Bishop John Keenan described as “destructive violence.” A 39-year-old man has since been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.
The attack caused widespread damage to graves and religious symbols in the cemetery. A five-metre wooden crucifix was deliberately set alight, and dozens of headstones were broken, leaving families devastated and prompting outrage from Church officials and the wider community.
Bishop Keenan of Paisley condemned the act, stating: “I am saddened and dismayed by this senseless vandalism and the destructive violence behind it. My thoughts and prayers are with the families who have had headstones attacked, as well as with the whole community who cherish their loved ones’ final resting place so tenderly.”
Police Scotland received the report around 8:50 AM and launched an immediate investigation. On June 30, a 39-year-old man appeared before Paisley Sheriff Court, charged with wilful fireraising, malicious mischief, breach of the peace, and possession of an offensive weapon. He remains in custody pending further proceedings. Authorities continue to urge witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
In recent years, churches and cemeteries across Scotland have been targets for vandalism and theft.
