Arson Destroyed Historic St Mungo’s Church in Cumbernauld
A massive fire tore through St Mungo’s Church in Cumbernauld, prompting a large-scale emergency response. Police confirmed it to be arson.
Emergency services were called around 7:50 p.m. after reports that St Mungo’s Church was “well-ablaze.” The fire burned overnight, leaving the building significantly damaged.
The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, Rt Rev Rosie Frew, surveyed the destruction with congregation members and was “brought to tears over the wreckage.” Detective Sergeant Craig Jeffrey confirmed: “Enquiries so far have established the fire was deliberate. We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed anything to contact us. We’d also ask anyone with footage of the area at the time to please come forward.”
The roadway on St Mungo’s Road has reopened, but the footpath around the church remains closed. Police continue to investigate the incident as arson, urging the public to provide any relevant information
