Viennese Church Evacuated During Mass after Bomb Scare

Two fake explosive devices triggered the evacuation of Vienna’s Karlskirche during a Catholic mass being held before the annual March for Life, raising concerns of targeted intimidation.
On October 4, 2025, two fake bombs—one ticking and one blinking—were discovered inside Karlskirche in Vienna during a Catholic mass held alongside the “March for Life”, a local pro-life demonstration. The devices triggered an evacuation and bomb squad response, though authorities later confirmed they were non-lethal and intended to provoke panic.
Caroline Hungerländer, integration spokeswoman for the Vienna People's Party, called the incident “a new level of escalation that we as a society must not accept,” while Johannes Pasquali, district party chairman, described it as “a violent attack on the free exercise of religion.”
A concerned citizen remarked, “It is disturbing to know that such threats can take place in our immediate vicinity.” The event raised broader questions about the vulnerability of religious sites in Vienna, where experts note higher risks compared to smaller Austrian cities, prompting calls for increased surveillance and security measures.
