Armenian Evangelical Church Mural in Marseille Vandalized with Political Message

Country: France

Date of incident: October 5, 2025

A decades-old Christian mural visible from the Marseille motorway was defaced with pro-Palestinian graffiti, when the words "Christ" were replaced by "Gaza" prompting public outcry over anti-Christian expression.

In Marseille, France, the mural “Christ died for our sins,” painted on the wall of the Armenian Evangelical Church in the Saint-Antoine district, was vandalized during the night of October 4th to 5th. The word “Christ” was erased and replaced with “Gaza,” altering the message to read “Gaza died for our sins.”

The act drew condemnation from public officials, including a local senator, who posted on social media: “Enough of this anti-Christian hatred that is expressed with impunity in our country under the pretext of foreign policy”. Parishioners restored the original inscription by manually removing the graffiti. No formal complaint was filed at the time, pending a decision by the church council.
