Statue of the Virgin Mary and Altar Vandalized on Good Friday

Country: France

Date of incident: April 18, 2025

A religious site in central Les Sables-d’Olonne was found desecrated on Good Friday, prompting condemnation and restoration efforts by local authorities.

On April 18, 2025, the morning of Good Friday, an altar and a statue of the Virgin Mary were discovered vandalized on Rue de la Bauduère in the center of Les Sables-d’Olonne, Vendée, France. The statue had been shattered into multiple pieces and the altar damaged, with fragments scattered at the site. The location, a publicly accessible stone grotto, was not under video surveillance, complicating efforts to identify the perpetrators.

Yannick Moreau, mayor of Les Sables-d’Olonne, described the incident as a “barbaric degradation” and pledged to “repair this outrage to local heritage by restoring the site to its original state”. The act occurred during a significant religious observance, intensifying its impact on the local Catholic community.
