Historic Crucifix Defaced With Political Graffiti
A 200-year-old crucifix in a Protestant church in Homberg/Ohm was defaced with anti-Israel slogans and political graffiti.
In Homberg-Dannenrod, Hesse, suspected anti-Israel vandals carried out a paint attack on the Protestant church, defacing a 200- to 300-year-old crucifix and smearing slogans such as “Free Palestine” and “Jesus is Palestinian” on the altar and walls. The damage was discovered by the sexton when the church, which had been left open day and night, was inspected.
Pastor Ingmar Bartsch stated, “The damage to the sanctuary is immediately visible.” He described the figure as “unique” and emphasised that experts would need to assess professional cleaning. Police launched an investigation into property damage harmful to the public, noting the religious significance of the objects. Bartsch added, “The fact that it is damaged in this way also leaves a mental scar. It is an emotional damage that is not affordable.”
