On December 8, 2025, a fire damaged hedges surrounding the Santuario in via del Borgo San Pietro in Bologna. Firefighters determined that the blaze, which began around 9 p.m., was unlikely to have started accidentally due to the evergreen nature of the plants, and police investigated it as arson. The flames spread quickly but did not reach the church building, nearby vehicles, or public property. Residents in adjacent buildings reported fear during the incident, with one commenting, “We were afraid it could reach the cars and the church itself.”
