Baroque Church Statues Vandalised

Country: Germany

Date of incident: December 7, 2025

Stone sculptures at the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche and Hildesheimer Dom were damaged, with facial features deliberately broken.

Unidentified individuals damaged three stone sculptures outside the Church of the Holy Cross in Hildesheim, Germany, with the destruction discovered by a parishionner on December 7, 2025. Police reported that the faces of the figures were specifically targeted, leaving fragments whose reconstruction remains uncertain, and estimated the financial loss at a mid-four-digit sum.

Authorities confirmed that similar acts of vandalism had also affected valuable baroque sculptures at the Hildesheimer Dom, including the figure of Saint John Nepomuk, which lost parts of its face. A police spokesperson stated, “We are investigating on suspicion of property damage and are asking witnesses to come forward,” while local reports noted that incidents of vandalism had persisted at the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche for weeks.
