Flottes Church Bells Damaged in Sabotage Act

Country: France

Date of incident: April 30, 2025

In Flottes, the bells of Saint-Blaise church were vandalised for the second time in recent weeks, causing them to ring out of tune and resulting in repair costs estimated at €6,000, according to the mayor.

As reported on April 30, the bells of the church of Saint-Blaise in the village of Flottes, have been the target of deliberate damage by unknown individuals. According to the account, this followed an earlier incident in December 2024. On the later occasion, one or more persons were alleged to have climbed onto the church roof, bent the hammer of a bell and damaged the control panel; the roof itself was also harmed in the course of the act.

The sabotage is expected to incur repair costs in excess of €6.000, covering work on the roof, the bell and its mechanism, not including labour by municipal teams.

The municipal authority of Pradines filed a complaint and an investigation was under way to identify the person or persons responsible. As reported, according to the mayor it might have been a malicious act by individuals who "no longer want to hear them. One might think of it as incivility. These are residents who want to live in a rural area but don't want to hear the crowing of roosters and the ringing of bells."
