Arson Attempt Inside German Church on Christmas

Unknown individuals ignited torn pages from prayer books on the church gallery in St. Maria, Haßlach, causing scorch marks and wax damage to the pews below. Thankfully, the fire did not spread, but the church suffered property damage.

According to police reports, unidentified individuals entered St. Maria Church in Haßlach in the municipality of Teuschnitz, Bavaria, between 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on December 25 and tore pages from prayer books before setting them on fire on the church’s upper gallery. Burning pages and liquid candle wax fell onto the pews beneath, leaving scorch marks and causing property damage in the low three‑digit range. Police stated, “Fortunately, no fire developed. Nevertheless, property damage in the three‑digit range occurred,” confirming both the risk and the extent of the damage. The Coburg Criminal Police opened an investigation and requested information from potential witnesses.
