Church Altar Cloth Set on Fire
An unknown perpetrator ignited an altar cloth in St Sebastian’s Church in Bad Aibling, leaving burn damage to the side altar and a melted microphone cable.
Police in Bad Aibling investigated suspected arson after an unidentified individual set fire to the altar cloth on the left side altar of St Sebastian’s Church. The burning cloth was later found discarded on the pavement outside the church, and the altar’s wooden frame and a microphone cable showed fire damage. Sacristan Georg Baumann discovered the charred cloth when locking the church and said, “I was really shocked,” noting that a visitor had confirmed the altar was intact earlier that afternoon. Police reported no concrete leads and appealed for information.
Church representatives condemned the act. Parish council chairman Edward Browne said, “I am outraged and frightened at the same time,” while Felix Schwaller warned it risked “the outbreak of a major fire in the Kirchzeile.” The church remained open during daytime hours.
