52-year-old Man Vandalizes Church and Sets Several Fires

Country: Germany

Date of incident: March 21, 2022

The Catholic church in Ispringer was the victim of an arson attack, as a perpetrator set fires in several spots of the church by using candles and other materials. This was reported on the 21st of March. Fortunately, the police patrol and the fire crew were there very fast and could track the fire before it really started. The damage to property was estimated at about 10,000 euros.

"The fire was only in the making," said commander Armin Trautmann.

Police headquarters in Pforzheim and the public prosecutor's office caught a 53-year-old suspect, who probably set the fire around 2 and 3 pm. The man was temporarily arrested in the afternoon. The public prosecutor's office added that the suspect could be mentally impaired.

The fire brigade in Ispringen reported that, apart from the sources of the fire, there was seemingly willful destruction: smashed windows, destroyed loudspeakers, and burnt seat cushions.

The suspect arrested on suspicion of serious arson in Ispringen on Monday was brought before the magistrate at the Pforzheim district court on the next day.

The public prosecutor's office issued a warrant for the 53-year-old's arrest and put it into effect and the suspect was then sent to a correctional institution.

The damage to property has been estimated at about 10,000 euros. The suspect pleaded guilty to the charge of aggravated arson, but his motive remained unclear.
