Church Vandalised and Eucharistic Vessel Taken
Unknown persons broke into the church of Santa Teresa del Bambin Gesù in Battipaglia. They overturned candles, damaged offertories and a broken glass in the sacristy, but stole only a small case used by extraordinary ministers to bring the Eucharist to the sick.
The incident occurred on 9 March 2025 at the Church of Santa Teresa del Bambin Gesù, where unknown individuals entered the church and broke open a donation container placed at the foot of a statue of Jesus. Inside the church, candles were overturned, offertory boxes were damaged, and a window in the sacristy was broken.
Among the items taken was a small container used by ministers to bring the Eucharist to the sick, an object with specific liturgical use in Catholic practice. Annalisa Spera, who reported the incident, described the impact on the community, stating: “I felt a great sadness in my heart, a sense of violation of a sacred place that I found indecent.”
The incident raises questions about the safety of places of worship and the social difficulties that lead some individuals to take extreme actions. The community, meanwhile, is rallying around the parish, hoping that similar episodes will not be repeated.
