Desecration of crosses at the sanctuary

Country: Spain

Date of incident: March 30, 2025

On the night of 29-30 March, vandals destroyed two crosses near the Sanctuary of St Michael in Aralar, in the Spanish Archdiocese of Pamplona and Tudela. This is the second attack on the site in recent months.

The perpetrators used metal tools to cut down two of the three roadside crosses leading to the shrine.

In an earlier attack in October (OIDAC reported), the church doors were painted with a Star of David and the word "Jude" before the entrance was set on fire. Despite the repeated acts of hate, the sanctuary remains open to worshippers and pilgrims.

Chaplain Father Alfonso Garciandía called the attack a 'serious act of vandalism' and urged society to unite in condemning such evil, noting that it symbolises a wider persecution of Christians.
