Religious Statue Destroyed in Vandalism
In Warsaw’s Praga-Północ district, vandals attacked a statue of Mary located near the Church of Our Lady of Loreto. Using a hammer, they destroyed the figure’s face and hands. The incident shocked local residents.
The perpetrators entered the courtyard and went to the grotto where the statue stood. They tore it from its pedestal and smashed it with a hammer. Then they left it on the ground and fled. Some time later, the parish priest and the sexton took the remains of the statue to the church and placed them in the chapel of St Anthony. The priests of the parish are in shock: "We do not know who could have committed such an act of desecration. This is a painful blow for our entire community." Mrs Teresa, a resident of Praga, said with tears in her eyes:"t's not just an act of vandalism, it's an act of desecration. It's about faith, about our religious feelings."
The case has been reported to the police. This is yet another case of religious symbols being attacked in Warsaw. In recent months there have been several cases of shrines, crosses and religious statues being vandalised. Not long ago, vandals destroyed a statue of the Virgin Mary in Żoliborz.
