Second arson attack on St Mary's Chapel in one year

On the evening of 12 May, St Mary's Chapel at St Margaret's Parish Church in Kahl am Main was targeted with arson for the second time this year. A church pew with seat cushions caught fire in a side wing of the building, causing toxic smoke to spread throughout the entire church. Although the flames had largely extinguished themselves by the time firefighters arrived, extensive smoke damage had been caused. The police are now searching for the arsonist.
According to the police in Lower Franconia, there is strong evidence suggesting that the February attack and the most recent one are linked. The sequence of events is very similar: in February, parts of the church were set on fire. This time, the pew cushion was burnt, causing further damage to the chapel. The building has suffered considerable smoke and soot damage, particularly to the interior walls.
The renewed fire has left behind debris and shock. Parish priest Mariusz Kowalski expressed his horror, saying, "It is a terrible feeling to see this important place of our faith and our community damaged like this. Moments like this are simply overwhelming and sad. This act leaves one feeling helpless."
Due to the health risks posed by the soot particles, the parish church must not be entered until it has been professionally cleaned thoroughly. The site has been handed over to the police for investigation. The police suspect deliberate arson and are appealing to the public for information.
