Consecrated Hosts Desecrated in Church in Venegono Superiore

Country: Italy

Date of incident: May 16, 2025

A church in Venegono Superiore was desecrated after perpetrators overturned the tabernacle and scattered consecrated hosts on the ground. The act directly targeted elements central to Catholic worship and deeply affected the local community.

The incident occurred on 16 May 2025 at the Church of Santa Maria, where unknown individuals entered the building and damaged the tabernacle in order to access its contents. The tabernacle was overturned and broken, and the ciborium containing consecrated hosts was removed and the consecrated hosts were scattered on the floor. There was also further damage recorded in the church.

The act directly affected the Eucharist, which in Catholic belief represents the real presence of Christ, making the incident particularly serious from a religious perspective. The report also raises the possibility that the act could have been carried out for occult or “satanic” purposes, although this has not been confirmed by authorities.

As a response, a Mass of reparation was scheduled for 21 May, and the church has been temporarily closed. Authorities have opened an investigation and appealed for witnesses.
