Country: Germany

Date of incident: May 19, 2025

A 24-year-old man was attacked in Wedding, Berlin, after revealing that he was Christian. On the night of 19 May, he was approached by several individuals who asked him about his religious beliefs. After answering that he was Christian, he was physically assaulted and sustained serious injuries. The authorities are investigating the attack as an anti-Christian hate crime.

A group of five men confronted the young man and questioned his faith. After confirming that he had been baptised as a Christian, the assailants proceeded to beat him, repeatedly hitting him on the head and leaving him seriously injured. Late in the evening, passers-by found the 24-year-old lying on the road at a junction and alerted paramedics, who took him to hospital with facial injuries. According to the police, the alleged attackers fled in an unknown direction. State security took over the investigation.

This is not the first time that someone has been targeted for their Christian faith in Berlin. In previous years, a man was injured for wearing chain with a cross, another was beaten and threatened with a knife because of his Christian tattoo and another was attacked for wearing two wooden Christian crosses

Also, less than a year ago, the St Matthew's Church in Berlin was the target of an arson attack.
