Vandalism at St. Michael's Church in Sonthofen

Country: Germany

Date of incident: June 1, 2025

A church in Sonthofen was vandalised with graffiti accusing the institution of abuse. The wording of the message points to a defamatory and accusatory motive beyond material damage.

The incident occurred during the night of 31 May–1 June 2025 at the St. Michael Church, where unknown perpetrators sprayed the message “Ja, auch hier wird missbraucht” (“Yes, abuse happens here too”) onto a wall near a side entrance of the church.

The act involved not only property damage but also the public display of an accusation directed at the church. The parish has since reacted to the incident and clarified that there is no indication of such abuse occurring in this specific parish, rejecting the claim implied by the graffiti.

The graffiti was subsequently removed. Police have opened an investigation and are seeking witnesses.
