Orthodox Chapel in Olbia Desecrated on Pentecost Sunday

Country: Italy

Date of incident: June 7, 2025

On the night of June 7th–8th, 2025, during Pentecost celebrations, the Orthodox chapel of Santa Croce in Olbia, Sardinia, was desecrated in a deeply disturbing attack. The door of the chapel, which is under the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate, was broken open, sacred objects were defiled, and an icon of Christ Pantocrator was destroyed. Parish priest Fr. Nikolay Volskyy described the incident as painful and explicitly anti-Christian, while Don Gianni Satta of the neighboring Catholic parish condemned the act as a cowardly offense against religious faith.

According to reports from OrthoChristian and local Italian media, the vandal or vandals entered the chapel forcibly, damaging the door and proceeding to desecrate the sanctuary. Altar candelabras were overturned, holy oil was spilled across the floor, and the large icon of Christ Pantocrator, central to the chapel’s iconostasis, was deliberately damaged. The attack took place in the early hours of Pentecost Sunday, a feast day marking the birthday of the Church in both Eastern and Western Christian traditions.

Fr. Volskyy, who leads the international Orthodox community in Olbia and also serves parishes in Cagliari and Burcei, emphasized the spiritual and emotional impact of the act. "I’m deeply saddened.", he said. "We will pray for this too, just as we will pray for peace in hearts and in the world."

A mobile phone left behind at the scene, along with visible footprints in the spilled oil, helped the police to quickly identify and locate a suspect. The individual later turned himself in and confessed to the crime. The Carabinieri are continuing their investigation, and charges for religious desecration and vandalism are expected.

Don Gianni Satta, the Catholic parish priest of the adjacent San Paolo Church, provided support and solidarity to the Orthodox faithful. In strong terms, he condemned the attack as “evidently anti-Christian,” stating: “together with the incredulity for the cowardice, has aroused feelings of pity, strength and peace of the Lord towards every man who frees man from every impulse of revenge and death.” He encouraged prayer and reconciliation instead.

The chapel of Santa Croce, though small, holds profound importance to the Orthodox community in Olbia. It is located directly beside the Church of San Paolo and has been a place of regular worship for Orthodox Christians of various nationalities. Local parishioners and neighboring churches have expressed sympathy and solidarity following the incident.
